NYS Announces 2023 Free Fishing Days; No License Needed on Specific Days
“Free fishing days offer established anglers an opportunity to share their passion for fishing with those who may be newer to the sport,” said Governor Kathy Hochul, as she announced the 2023 dates for Free Freshwater Fishing Days in New York. “Spreading these days throughout the year gives anglers of all ages, abilities, and experience levels a chance to fish across the seasons and discover the abundant fishing opportunities in New York — benefiting our local economies in the process.”
According to the announcement, the requirement for a freshwater fishing license is waived on February 18 to 19, June 24 to 25, National Hunting and Fishing Day on September 23, and November 11. The Free Fishing Days program was initiated in 1991 to introduce people to fishing and encourage them to purchase a New York State freshwater fishing license.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) provides a wide range of resources to help people learn to fish, including the I FISH NY Beginners’ Guide to Freshwater Fishing, a video series, and the Places to Fish websites. The DEC also offers free fishing clinics that are approved, and the DEC website will be updated as new events are added throughout the year.
“Fishing New York’s world-class waters is more than just an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors all year long, it’s a perfect chance to spend time and connect with family and friends,” said DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos. Yellow perch, northern pike, walleye, lake trout, brown trout, Atlantic salmon, and black crappie are some of the popular species to target through the ice in New York during the colder months. However, anglers are advised to check the thickness of the ice before leaving the shore to ensure safety.
Although the requirement for a freshwater fishing license is waived during Free Fishing Days, all other fishing regulations remain in effect. Those who are 16 years of age or older must have a valid fishing license except during the Free Fishing Days. To purchase a license, visit the DEC website.
