Sturgeon Pool – Ulster Park, NY
Fishing at Sturgeon Pool in Ulster Park, NY.Sturgeon Pool is a reservoir that is located in Rifton, NY which was created by damming the Wallkill River. Contrary to it’s name, there are no longer any Sturgeon present in this waterbody, however before the dam was built, Sturgeon were present in the waterbody as it is a tributary of the Hudson River. Sturgeon had migrated to this waterbody to spawn, but since the dam was built in 1922, it prevents the Sturgeon from migrating to the area. These fish used this water body because they could not make it further upstream due to natural barriers.
The waterbody is dammed for a hydro electric plant usage, which is owned and operated by Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation, who also own an area of the shoreline which is only accessible to employees of Central Hudson. To learn more about this Hydro Electric Plant, CLICK HERE.
